Whale carcass removed from Seapoint beachfront

Yesterday there was a warning sent out by the National Sea Rescue Institite to boaters and sea goers to “exercise extreme caution and to be on high alert (on the Atlantic Seaboard in the vicinity of Camps Bay, Clifton and Sea Point) for a large whale, suspected to be a whale carcass, floating semi-submerged about a kilometer off-shore of Camps Bay. An investigation to determine the species of the whale and a forensic analysis (including determining if this whale is a carcass or if it is a whale in ill health) will be attempted to be obtained by the Department of Environment – Oceans and Coasts on Tuesday (the attempts will depend on where the whale has drifted to by morning).”

Today the carcass has come ashore in Seapoint and was removed this morning. I heard on the radio that during lifting the carcass broke in half and made quite a mess. The below image was posted on twitter

Whale carcass this morning at Seapoint, Cape Town

This is what was written on Twitter by Janbaai

  • The whale just tore, fell from the crane, and exploded on the promenade. This is now very messy. Kids crying everywhere.
  • No photo. Smell after whale exploded was unpleasant and most people, including me, ran away
